Grooming a Yorkshire Terrier
One of the greatest appealing features of a Yorkshire terrier is its beautiful coat, if properly groomed this fur is long, silky and soft. But the coat will need brushing by you and professional grooming every few weeks to keep it healthy.
As the owner of a Yorkshire terrier its best if you brush his coat at least once a day. This will do three things:
1. If you start brushing (gently) as soon as you get your puppy, your Yorkie will get used to being brushed from an early age. Try to make the brushing a relaxing, bonding time eg when he's on your knee, almost napping, in the evening while your watching TV.
2. With daily brushing the coat will never get into big mats that would be painful to brush out.
3. Regular brushing will keep the coat in good condition by distributing the natural oils in the coat.
To help you keep your Yorkie’s coat in tip-top shape, follow these Yorkshire Terrier care tips:
- You will need a brush - The best brush for Yorkshire Terrier care is a pin brush that has a rubber back. This brush is soft but the pins of the brush will penetrate the coat and the undercoat.
- You will need a comb - The best comb for Yorkshire Terrier care is a sturdy metal comb that has long teeth. This should be used to help work out any of the tangles or mats in the dog’s coat. Use your fingers and the comb to pull apart the mat without ripping your dog’s hair. BE GENTLE!
- Lightly spray his coat with a dog conditioner, water, or a mixture of the two. Brushing his coat when it is dry will damage his hair.
Don’t forget to give him a treat after every grooming!
In addition, make sure you bath your Yorkie on a regular basis (once a month or once every two weeks) to keep his coat clean. After each bath give him a good combing, and make sure you fully dry his hair with a hair dryer. You also need to have his coat trimmed by a professional dog groomer every few months.
Daily grooming will ensure mats and knots are kept out of your dog’s hair and you have a beautiful Yorkie with a soft shiny coat!
