House Training your Yorkshire Terrier
House breaking your Yorkie should generally follow the same priciples og house training any dog or new puppy; but there are a few tips that will help specifically with your Yorkshire terrier.
As Yorkies are generally very small dogs, their bladder too is very small and cannot hold the capacity of the average dog's bladder; this means that your Yorkie will need to pee more often!
When you first get your puppy (or untrained adult) take it outside to go to the toilet every hour. If the puppy manages to do a pee whilst outside give it loads of praise and perhaps a small treat. the puppy will quickly get the idea 'if I pee outside, I get a treat' and you'll soon have a toilet trained dog!
Toilet training your Yorkshire terrier training is not a difficult process as Yorkies are mostly very bright little dogs who soon catch onto new ideas and are eager to please you. However, they are still a terrier! and that mischeivous steak will come out if you don't take training seriously - no matter how small, cute and fluffy they are!
The most important part of training from the owners part is patience. Taking your puppy outside every hour and after meal times requires patience! Set a timer to beep every hour and be strict with yourself even if you're in the middle of your favourite TV show, or a conversation... take your puppy outside - it will only be for 2-3 weeks and you'll have a fully toilet trained Yorkie!
When you take him outside, put the puppy in the grass and give him a command to wee eg “Go pee”. Say your command before and while your puppy is eliminating. Eventually your dog will pee on your command, which will be very useful in the future.
As you can see, you need to dedicate plenty of your time to this particular type of Yorkie training. Be prepared to take time off work when you first get your puppy, or make sure someone will be at home to teach the dog when you are not there.
This type of Yorkie training works best when you keep your puppy’s routine as regular as possible. Try to make mealtimes at the same time each day and take the puppy outside after every meal.
If your Yorkie has accidents in the house, which is bound to happen, do not discipline your dog unless you catch him in the act. When you catch your pup in the act, say “No!” in a sharp firm tone and immediately carry your puppy outdoors and let him finish doing his business out there. When he’s finished, praise him. In fact, any time your dog successfully eliminates outside, praise him with heavy enthusiasm. You want your Yorkie to know that his actions have greatly pleased you.
You'll have a toilet trained Yorkie after 2-3 weeks of dedicated training, but then you'll have a house trained Yorkie for the rest of his life!
