Pit Bull Temperament
To understand the temperament of the pit bull terrier breed, needs some consideration to its history. They are not the mean fighting dogs that the press would have us believe, but they have got 'fighting' in their nature so that needs to be mastered.
Pit bulls terriers are not mean spirited, but they are a lot stronger than other dogs. When some dogs might nip at your hand or feet, a pit bull can chomp down with a lot of force.
But for the most part, pit bulls are human friendly. They are very loyal, and when training (raising) a pit bull, it's best to let him/her meet and play with as many people as possible.
The reason pit bulls have a bad reputation is because the owners want mean dogs. You can train a Boston Terrier to be just as mean, but it's not as strong, so the damage it inflicts in an attack isn't as much as pit bull.
But when raised correctly, pit bulls are the best dog (in my opinion) that a family can have. Now, they are human friendly, but the pit bull breed is not animal friendly.
Pit bulls are "game" dogs, which means that it loves to rough house, which can lead to fights. They like to be violent with other animals, especially other pit bulls. When they get after another dog, it's not because the want to kill or eat them, but that's what they were bred for for so long;THE BREED IS A FIGHTING DOG.
But, for the most part, the fightings stay with other animals, not people.
